Neymar is dreaming about Barcelona but seems impossible
- Updated: 26th November 2019
During the international break, we need to once again speak about the Neymar case that continues to be on the agenda. With the player injured, and PSG doing very well in the Champions League, his departure from the Parisian club continues to be a possibility. However, there don’t seem to be financial arguments from the side of Barcelona to redeem the Brazilian attacker.
A mistake that has been proving to be costly
It was on August 3rd, 2017 that PSG advanced onto the biggest signing in the history of football by ensuring the services of Neymar from Barcelona by 222 Million Euros.
Back then, the attacker and captain of the Brazilian national team claimed his desire to asset himself as the brightest star and leader of a club as the main reason for his departure, something that was impossible with Lionel Messi in Barcelona, who had the intent of fighting for the Ballon D’Or in the upcoming years.
But things didn’t always go well for Neymar in the not very competitive Ligue 1 and that is also true for the crucial matches of the Champions League, where his club hasn’t been capable of reaching truly high levels.
But the problems haven’t been only that competitive question, because his constant injuries are also getting in the way of his development as a player.
He only played 30 matches on the first season in Paris, 28 on the 2nd season and this year he has only played on 5 occasions so far, having suffered a new injury recently.
Besides that, the player has become the biggest novel of the Summer transfer window because he requested his departure from the club and admitted leaving Barcelona was a mistake.
The clubs have even met on a couple of occasions in the sense of trying to find a solution that didn’t hurt anybody, but the truth is that PSG wasn’t pleased with the proposals of the Catalans which means, for now, they opted for maintaining the Brazilian amongst their roster.
New problem on the horizon
Neymar signed until 2022 when he joined the French club and his contract is nearing its end.
In fact, and in case there is no agreement for a renewal, PSG might be forced to sell the player at the end of last season if they want to recover some of their initial investment, although the proximity to the end of his contract might prevent the club from requesting too much money for the player.
That way, the possibility of Barcelona signing Neymar once again briefly is already being discussed again, since the player has been intransigent regarding a potential contract renewal until 2025.
On the other hand, Barcelona don’t seem to have financial arguments right now, after having spent a good amount of money in Frenkie de Jong and Antoine Griezmann in the last transfer window, therefore, we don’t anticipate the potential negotiations that might occur to be easy.
Besides that, Barcelona has an astronomical payroll these days with Messi, Suárez, Griezmann, Dembélé, Arturo Vidal, etc. consuming a lot of financial resources of the Catalan club which means a potential wage agreement with Neymar might also be complicated.
Focus on the recovery and ambition in the Champions League
Despite his position being very clear to the club, Neymar will try to be more professional on the pitch while he plays with a PSG shirt. He is on an advanced stage of his recovery from injury and he should soon return to the options of Thomas Tuchel.
The Parisian club has been strolling through the Ligue 1 as usual, but they have been more dazzling in the Champions League where they count with victories in every match played so far, with the victory by 3-0 on the reception to Real Madrid standing out.
The team has that way 12 points conquered in 4 matches, having scored 10 goals and not having conceding any, on an excellent demonstration of competence that sustains the idea that they might fight for the European title in 2019/20.
Neymar will certainly be an interested party on this and, if he is available, he will do everything to help the club, despite playing somewhat thwarted at this stage.
With Neymar’s transfer hardly being achievable on the winter transfer window, everything suggests that the Brazilian attacker will form a duo with Kylian Mbappé on the quest for the European title, but will there be enough harmony amongst the group to enhance that ambition? We will see…
