Croatia vs Greece Prediction and Betting Tip Preview

2018 World Cup

Croatia vs Greece – 2018 World Cup Qualification: Croatia and Greece meet this Thursday…

On a match of the 1st leg of this access play-off to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Croatia finished the group stage in 2nd place with 20 points gained, 2 less than Iceland who won group I.

As we know, the Croatian national team has a fantastic set of players. However, under the command of Cacic they never worked collectively.

One round before the end of the group stage, the new manager Dalic took control of the team just before an extremely important match where they were brilliantly beat Ukraine 2-0 at home.

It is therefore expected that this new manager builds up on those good indicators the team has left so that Croatia can be amongst the best teams in the world, because that is where they belong.

Greece qualified for this play-off after finishing in 2nd place of group H with 19 points gained, having scored 2 more than Bosnia who was knocked out of the competition.

The decisive match was in Cyprus where they were able to get an important win, having then hosted the weak national team of Gibraltar on the last round, where only a miracle would avoid the Greeks’ trip to the World Cup in Russia.

On this Greek national team, the highlight is their good defensive solidity, since they have only conceded 6 goals on the 10 group stage matches they played.

Croatia vs Greece – Betting Tip and Prediction:

There is one common aspect on these two national teams: the fact that neither of them record many goals on their matches. On the 10 matches that Croatia has played, we only saw matches with more than 3 goals on 1 occasion.

On the other hand, Greece only had 2 matches with more than 3 goals on their group stage campaign.

That’s the common denominator that, allied to the fact that this will be the first leg of a play-off, means we should have a more cautious encounter.

Still, I don’t believe that the Greeks’ good defensive process will be enough to avoid defeat against the Croatians away from home.

I fully expect 1-0 for Croatia. I’ll explain why.

Croatia is playing home, in last 15 matches, she won 12 and drew the other three. Croatia will have fan support and psychological pressure to win at home.

Dalic is looking to cement and truffle any doubts the nation has of his managerial talent.

The players want to imprint a sense of team play with the new coach that so sorely lacked during the last coach’s tenure.

Dalic prefers attacking football but not at the expense of defensive solidity. I fully expect Croatian to March in at high tempo first twenty minutes, then shift to lower tempo and build possession and try to push the Greece into opening the sides with ball retention. Likewise We can expect Greece to settle in and follow Croatia tempo and try to bully the Croatian players running channels and will look for fast counterattack through the wings, but otherwise sit deep in their own half defending with nine players.

Both teams lack firepower up and while we can expect chances on both sides, there won’t be many goals.

I expect the first half to be fairly cautious and second half to start more explosive with high Croatian attacking threat which will eventually result in a goal. Croatia under Dalic will probably push for a second – to cement themselves as winner, but Greece will probably open up and push Croatians to defend under pressure – Croatia is seemingly notorious in reshaping from defending under pressure to full attack, but the lack of Greece’s attacking talent will probably mean no other goal will happen until the end.

We can expect a cautious first half, which won’t be pleasing to the eye – and more scorching second.
