Cruzeiro vs Corinthians – Copa do Brasil :The current Copa do Brasil’s Champions
After having beaten Flamengo in the final last year, Cruzeiro are preparing to face a new decision for the 2nd most desired title in Brazilian football.
After having eliminated Santos and Palmeiras on the previous rounds of the competition, the hosts will face another team from São Paulo, that they’ve only faced once this season so far, in the Brazilian Serie A, with Corinthians winning by 2-0, in São Paulo.
After a great quality first half, Cruzeiro have been losing some momentum in the Brazilian Serie A, so much that they come into this time in 9th place of the league table, with 37 points conquered, 19 points away from the leaders Palmeiras, although with 1 less match played.
Much due to their participation in several decisions, like for example their decline on the Copa Libertadores’ quarter-finals, that was consummate on the past Thursday, against Boca Juniors.
After losing by 2-0 in Argentina, Cruzeiro hosted Boca at the Mineirão and despite the superiority on the pitch throughout most of the match, they were unable to win by a 2-goal difference and the match ended with a 1-1 draw, with a lot of complaints from the team led by Mano Menezes.
It is after that elimination and with the team being winless for 3 matches, due to the draw against Palmeiras
(that, however, clinched their qualification for this final) in the Copa do Brasil and the loss, by 3-1, against Scolari’s team in the Brazilian Serie A, that Cruzeiro come into this encounter.
One of the biggest concerns of Mano Menezes for this first leg of the cup final will be the absence of De Arrascaeta, midfielder that has been imposing himself as an important and influential piece of Cruzeiro’s offensive creativity
and that surely won’t play in this first leg, due to his presence on the list of called-up players of Oscar Tabarez for the next matches of the Uruguayan national team
(Cruzeiro and the player itself even tried to avoid that, but Arrascaeta is already alongside his Uruguayan teammates and there aren’t many chances of him returning in time to play in the 2nd leg).
This is a team with a lot of tradition and reputation in the history of Brazilian football. Corinthians isn’t living one of the best periods of their history, with their season being marked by blatant inconsistency
and both their weak performance in the Brazilian Serie A and their elimination against the Chilean of Colo Colo in the Copa Libertadores weren’t expected by their fans at the beginning of the year.
In any case, the arrival of Jair Ventura to the coaching job of the team seems to have had a positive impact and their campaign in the Copa do Brasil is the perfect example of that,
with the highlight of their victory against Flamengo on the semi-finals of the competition, which was the only round where the former Santos’ manager was already in charge of the team – however, it was the most important and difficult one.
Corinthians reaches this 1st leg of the Copa do Brasil’s final at a period of apprehension regarding their performance in the Serie A.
They are winless for 3 rounds, thanks to the draws against Internacional (1-1) and América Mineiro (0-0), besides the mauling suffered at home on the past Saturday against Flamengo (0-3), and they are in 11th place of the league table, with only 35 points,
which leaves them with only 5 more points than Vasco and Ceará, that even have 1 less match played, which means they are far from having avoided relegation yet.
In some statements already made about a week ago, where he predicted what would be the Copa do Brasil’s final matches between Cruzeiro and Corinthians, Jair Ventura has already said what he expects.
Quote from: Jair Ventura
“A match without a lot of goal scoring chances, the teams have studied each other.
This won’t be a pretty match to see, because it is a very calculated one. We know that Mano won’t go all-out and that Corinthians won’t go all-out.”
We are upon another 90 minutes of the tensest football that we will see in Brazil as we approach the end of the season.
Besides this being the first leg of a final that offers the possibility of another trophy for these clubs’ accolades, Cruzeiro and Corinthians fight for the opportunity to ensure a spot in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores, that is “just” the most prestigious continental competition of South-American football, similar to the Champions League.
With Jair, Corinthians has been improving the defensive aspect of their game, and I don’t see the heavy loss to Flamengo as something worth giving a lot of importance, since all their efforts are pointed towards these two matches against Cruzeiro
and after having eliminated precisely Flamengo on the Copa do Brasil’s semi-finals, the confidence will be high, even because theoretically, Flamengo has been superior to Cruzeiro.
From the side of the hosts, Arrascaeta will be an important absence, since the Uruguayan is the engine of Cruzeiro’s offensive game and certainly with Rafinha in his place, there will be – however slightest – a decrease in terms of quality on the advanced build-up play of the home side.
I expect a match where both teams will prioritize their defensive organization, where they will be much more scared to lose and concede a goal than exactly will to decide now and go on the attack.
Cruzeiro vs Corinthians – Betting Tip and Prediction:
Playing at home, Cruzeiro has the favouritism and they should take the initiative more.
However, I don’t believe that Mano Menezes will take a lot of risks with so much at stake and with 90 plus minutes ahead of us within a week,
even because in case Corinthians scores here and has the advantage for the 2nd leg, the task would become substantially harder for Cruzeiro.
This is a match that has everything to go “Under”, possibly even finishing goalless or, at most, with 1 goal scored.
